Newsletter 15 - Term 3 - Week 8 - 2022

Hello everyone, and welcome to our newsletter for week 8, term 3.
There are so many great news stories to share this fortnight, that I don’t even know where to begin!
Firstly, I would like to congratulate every participant of our Colour Fun Run. It was such a remarkable turn out to a day that was filled with bright smiles and bright colours! Everyone from our AM Pre-schoolers, to our staff, to our Parents, to the Principal (my hair is still green!) got involved and had fun to raise money for our school. I would like to thank the super-mums, the proud-dads, families and friends, community stakeholders, and our dedicated staff who come together for these events to make magic memories and lasting legacies for our kids! And finally, THANK YOU to our students – who have absolutely blown me away with their dedicated and creative fundraising efforts. Collectively, the students and families of AAS have raised $11,059 for our school! As promised, the students who raised the highest funds were announced and awarded with their prizes at assembly this morning. Congratulations to Transition A who are awarded with the class party for raising the most funds collectively. The biggest and best class party is coming your way. Also, a huge congratulations to our individual winners who were phenomenal in their fundraising efforts are:
1st Prize with $1,235 Bonnie Dornan
2nd Prize with $1,160 Jackson McCulloch
3rd Prize with $860 Logan Mohenoa
Another amazing achievement and congratulations is in order for our Senior Choir BEAT performers. This week the Senior Choir, accompanied by Ms Peta Bartley, Mr Tom Elliot and our wonderful parent helpers Mel Colville and Armanda Ahovelo flew into Darwin, where they stayed for three nights and rehearsed and performed in the NT performing arts extravaganza, the 2022 BEAT Festival. Our Senior Choir joined more than 10,000 other students from all over the Territory to showcase their talents. This trip has been a long time in the making for some of our students and families, with COVID interrupting the plans for the past two years. I was fortunate enough to be in Darwin and attend the performance at the Darwin Entertainment Centre. All of the car washing, and car boot selling, and sausage sizzles, and raffles paid off as our students took the stage and made us all so proud! What an achievement and what an experience! Thanks to Peta and co for making this happen!
This week we celebrated National Indigenous Literacy Day. Students across the school collaborated to create and illustrate a narrative about ‘Dingarrbiya and Yiburada’ which means ‘The Crocodile and The Wallaby’. It was wonderful to witness out students supporting one another and working collaboratively to create a shared resource. Once our story is published, our students will be presenting a copy to the Alyangula Community Library.
Classes have also been busy rehearsing their performance for the Arts and Culture Festival which is taking place on Wednesday 21st September at Alyangula Area School. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities and workshops throughout the day that reflect Indigenous culture, and cultures from around the world. Each class have selected their own country to celebrate, and in the afternoon and evening, the classes will be selling foods from their country and performing a dance/song from their country. During weeks 8 and 9 we have been focussing on the school value ‘Excellence’. I have shared some examples of excellence already, although there are many examples that I witness every day, throughout the school at AAS. Keep up the great work!
A reminder to parents that 2023 Preschool enrolments are now open for new preschool enrolments. If you have a child who will have turned 3 ½ by January 2023 they are eligible to enrol to our preschool program.
The fog and the smoke this week have made it difficult for us to get out to our Malkala and Angurugu families for the bus run pickups. If the roads or highway is closed, we ask families to monitor our Facebook page and SeeSaw to be advised of alternate arrangements. If you receive a message about the bus run, please spread the word throughout community so that everyone gets the message!
