Principal's Message

Hi All,

Can you believe we are already past the half way mark of term two!

This Wednesday, our school successfully participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time (NSST). This annual initiative brings together thousands of schools and early learning centers across the country to promote the joy of reading and storytelling. Our students gathered in their classrooms, alongside their peers nationwide, to engage in the simultaneous reading of a specially selected book, The Speedy Sloth. This event not only celebrates the power of literature but also reinforces the importance of literacy within our community.

I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Reconciliation Week, which will be observed next week. This week provides us with a valuable opportunity to reflect upon our shared history, acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and work towards building stronger relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. Throughout the week, our SRC have organised a range of engaging activities and discussions to foster dialogue and deepen our students' knowledge about reconciliation. A thank you to GEMCO for creating events afterschool hours that let us come together as a community and actively participate, as we strive towards a more inclusive and united society.

In addition to our Reconciliation events next week, our School Representative Council (SRC) will be hosting a special lunch event for Friday 2^nd June. Information will be sent home to families today, on the menu will be mac and cheese, garlic bread and a popper. Our SRC Special Lunch initiative also provides a fundraising opportunity for the school. The students will be nominating what they would like the funds to go towards, and I look forward to sharing their insight with you in the next newsletter.

Today we had a very special visitor attend Alyangula Area School. The Minister for Arnhem, Hon. Selena Uibo, Selena presented a copy of Thank You Rain by Gapuwiyak artist Johnny Warrkaja Malibirr and written by Sally Morgan. 

Lastly, I would like to remind families that school photos will be taken during Monday and Tuesday of Week 8 of this term (5 June and 6 June). We know that these photographs serve as cherished mementos, capturing the growth and achievements of our students throughout the year – plus they also brighten the day of our family and friends as gifts. This is why we are committed to ensuring that we receive quality school photos for our families. Online ordering forms are available from the front office for famiies who did not order in term 1. All other orders stand. We encourage all students to come to school dressed neatly and ready to smile for the camera, and remember – no sport shirts on photo days!

Absentee Form

We encourage families to use the absentee form instead of the school phone number when advising the school that your child will be absent from school. 

Arrival at School

No child should be at school before 7.45am. Children arriving before 7.45am will remain seated in the covered area until that time. A teacher commences playground duty at 7.45am each morning.  

Appointments and Signing in/Out

It is preferred that all student’s appointments be made outside of school hours so as not to disturb their learning. However, if this is not possible then carers are asked to report to the office and sign out their child. The office will call the student to the office for collection.

At no time should a carer go directly to the class during school hours. Upon return the carer must return to the office to sign the student back in.

Emergency Contact Details

If your child/rens emergency contact has left the Eylandt. It is essential that the School Office maintains up-to-date records of your address, telephone numbers, email addresses and emergency contacts in case of illness or injury to you child. Please ensure you complete this form the below form and return it at your earliest convenience. 

Whole School Assembly

Every second Friday we hold a whole school assembly and invite parents, families and school community members to join in the occasion. Our assemblies commence at 8:10am and always focus on celebrating student success. Classroom teachers nominate two students to receive a Merit Award at each assembly. Parents will be notified when their child is receiving an award to ensure that they can be present for the moment. In addition to this, our classes take turns in presenting a class performance at each assembly. Once again parents are notified of the class performance by their child’s teacher.
