Principal's Message

Dear Families

I hope this newsletter finds you well. It's been a bustling time at Alyangula Area School with a whirlwind of activities and events that have enriched our school community.

Last week, we celebrated Science Week with a series of engaging activities that ignited curiosity and enthusiasm among our students. From captivating experiments to break time STEM activities and insightful discussions, our students delved into the wonders of the scientific world, fostering a love for exploration and discovery. A big thanks to Ms Sinead for facilitating the week of activities.

As we stepped into this week, we were excited to embrace the magic of books during Book Week. Our students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of literature through various activities, exploring their favourite stories and characters. It's an excellent opportunity to nurture a lifelong love for reading. This week marks the final week for the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge and we wrapped the week up with our Book Week Parade! What a spectacular Parade that was! 

Our commitment to holistic education continues with Learning on Country program facilitating a full day excursion with our Middle years students to Salt Creek. Our students have been studying the life cycle of a mussel, and had the opportunity to head out on country to learn how to hunt, cook and eat mud mussels.

This week we also had 8 female students across upper primary and middle years attend a week-long leadership camp in Darwin through AFLNT attending the Michael Long Leadership and Learning Centre. From all reports, this camp has been an enriching experience and valuable learning opportunities for our girls. We are looking forward to hearing all about it when they return this afternoon.

Next week marks the final week that our School Opinion survey will be open. A reminder will be sent to parents today. Participation in this survey is imperative for the school to gain understanding of our parents' perspectives on the school as well as your child's learning at home. Communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home, and parents views on the school's support of learning and positive behaviour help build an accurate and timely picture that we can use for practical improvements. We strongly encourage all families to participate, the survey will close next Friday 1^st September.

Finally, I like to address the recent electrical fire incident in the upper primary class that I am sure has been a hot topic of conversation! I'm relieved to inform you that everyone was safe, and our dedicated team acted swiftly to manage the situation (thanks Fireman Aftab and Fireman Tamo!).
The affected area (Ms Eilis’ classroom) is currently being restored to ensure the safety and comfort of our students. It has since been determined that a faulty light had caught fire in the roof, which melted onto the projector. Parts of the light and the roof dropped to the floor, catching the carpet alight. It was in a moment like the event yesterday, that the drills that we practice throughout the year really pay off. Staff and students knew their role as we executed our fire emergency plan for a swift exit to safety.

Help Support our school while having a little pink flamingo fun!! Join the fun and flock a friend, family member or neighbours front yard!

If you have been flocked, you have the opportunity to choose the next house (by paying a suggested donation fee of $30). The recipient is not required to make a donation. The flock will be moved to the next house after 2 days regardless of a donation.

Colour Fun Run

Alyangula Area School is running an online sponsored Colour Run fundraiser to encourage our students to get active and to raise much needed funds towards a range of resources and initiatives including sports equipment and playground activities.

Our Colour Run is a great way to bring our school together to work towards a common goal, the results of which will benefit all our current and future students.

All pupils will be seeking online sponsorship for their participation in our Colour Run. All funds raised will go towards our upgrades. The funds raised by our school community make a huge difference in enhancing the overall school environment and we couldn’t undertake such amazing projects without your support!

How will this fundraiser work? We are using online fundraising company Go Raise It.  Collecting sponsorship online makes it super easy for everyone - no more door knocking, your child can collect more donations from further afield (friends and family living overseas, work colleagues etc) and no need to worry about handling all that cash.

How do I sign my child up to fundraise online? Each child can sign up for their very own fundraising web page to send out to collect online sponsorship from anyone, anywhere!

Multiple children in your family? No problem, all children can sit under the same email address. You’ll find a button to set up another page while logged in to the fundraising account you created first.

Do I have to sign up for an online account to fundraise? We would love everyone to have an online account as this allows the club to significantly reduce the administration overhead of collecting and dealing with cash. Go Raise It adhere to strict cyber safe guidelines, and this is built into our fundraising website. If you really do not want an online fundraising page, and still want to participate please check with the club office to see if you can collect cash.

Prizes:

We have a great range of fundraising prizes available including spot prizes and overall fundraising prizes for classes/individuals. Please see the Prizes page linked on the Fundraising Hub page of our fundraising website.
