Newsletter 10 - Term 2 - Week 8 - 2022
From the Principal
Welcome to our newsletter for the Week 8, Term 2. Wow, another fortnight down as we inch closer to closing out this semester. As they say, time flies when your having fun!
Firstly, it would be amiss of me not to mention the fabulous Reconciliation Week events that took place throughout Groote Eylandt last week. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our school community, GEMCO and Groote Eylandt residents for promoting and celebrating National Reconciliation Week 2022. From the work that has been happening in classrooms, to local AFL matches, community markets, and workshops the sharing and celebration of culture has been truly remarkable. I have enjoyed having conversations with students and discussing how they can “Be Brave and Make Change” so that we can benefit all Australians, and for AAS to continue to share, celebrate and harness the wonderful cultures that exist in our community.
Next week we have another exciting school event taking place in our Alyangula School Athletics Carnival. The students have been practicing and refining their track and field skills for the events that will be held on the day. As always, parent and family support are what makes these types of events such a success, and we encourage all families who are available to attend to come along and cheer everyone on! As in previous years, field events will take place at the school throughout the morning, followed by a 12.30pm dismissal for all students. Students are then required to return to the Town Oval to compete in the track events. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic to enjoy as they spectate, or alternatively the school Fundraising Committee will be holding a sausage sizzle and some other foods and drinks that will be available for purchase on the night. Specific details and times for the Athletics Carnival are outlined further down in the newsletter. I would like to personally thank Peter Molnar and Sharron Allwood for all the behind the scenes work that it takes to the event like this off the ground. May the best team win … (Go Redbacks!).
As we near the end of Semester, we are much closer to finalising our workforce and curriculum plans for semester two, which will see a second preschool group running in our Early Childhood area starting term 3. If you are, or if you know of, a parent who has a child that has enrolled in our 3 ½ year old Preschool program stay tuned for session information to be released by the end of next week. 1950438513
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, staff have been working diligently to produce student semester reports that will be sent home to families on Wednesday in Week 10, the 22nd of June. Again, if you have any questions or concerns about how your child is progressing, we encourage you to make a time to have a discussion with your child's classroom teacher.
Unfortunately, the school has sustained some damage over the past few weeks that is occurring outside of school hours. A reminder that the school grounds are not an area to play afterschool or over the weekend. Although it has been wonderful to see the large number of students attending afterschool activities that are held on the basketball court and oval, it is important to remember that the same rules apply to the remainder of the school grounds (no bike riding/scootering around the school, no access to the down ball area etc) when these activities are occurring. If any community members notice any suspicious activity on the school grounds outside of school hours, we request that you report it to Police.
Another long weekend! This Monday (13th June) there will be no school as it is a Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday. The final day for term two will be Friday 25th June. This is a three-week break, followed by a NT wide Curriculum Day on the 18th July. Students are to return to school on Tuesday 19th July, 2022. Please note Friday Week 1, Term 3 (22nd July) there will be no school for Darwin Show Public Holiday.

Award Winners
Congratulations to our award winners for weeks 7 and 8.
Alyangula Area School Athletics Carnival
Permission forms were distributed to students this week for the Inter-House athletics carnival which will be held on Thursday June 16. Please sign and return these forms to your child's classroom teacher at your earliest convenience.
Atheletics Day run down:
8:00am to 12:30pm
Transition – Year 1 classes will compete in a series of fun field events down in the Junior School area from 8:15am until lunch.
Years 2 - 12 will compete on the school oval in the traditional field events of long jump, high jump, discus, and shotput. A vortex throw and obstacle relay will round out the field events.
Students will be dismissed from school at the commencement of lunch break at 12:40pm.
Please note that there will be no staff supervision of students during the afternoon.
4:00pm
Students will then be required to re-assemble at the Alyangula Town Oval for the track events.
A BBQ and snacks will be sold on the night by the school's Fundraising Committee.

Farewell Leanne Hill
Alyangula Community Library would like to say a big cheerio to our fabulous Librarian Leanne Hill. We have been fortunate to have her working in our service for the last four years and in that time the library has benefited greatly from her expertise. The time and effort that she has put into developing all library collections is evident in the outstandingly new, diverse and beautifully presented resources. The space is comfortable and inviting, thanks to the furniture and shelving she has acquired and arranged. We hope to continue building on Leanne’s great initiatives, such as STEM and puzzle clubs, and we thank her for developing the Community Library’s policy, procedures and collection management manuals. Thanks again for everything you have done and best of luck in your future adventures. In the words of Tim Healy, “The most important assets of a library go home at night, they are the library staff”.
Alyangula Senior Choir Raffle - WINNER
CONGRATULATIONS to the winner of the $300 Intimo raffle: RACHEL HAWKS-BENNETT! This was drawn during assembly on Friday the 27th May. We would like to thank everyone for purchasing tickets and supporting our Senior Choir to attend the BEAT festival performance in Darwin in September
