Welcome to Alyangula Area School. The staff, parents and students welcome you into our school community. We trust that your time spent with us will be personally satisfying and rewarding. Alyangula Area School offers education for students from the age of 3 ½ to 18 through our Preschool, Early Years, Primary, Middle School and Senior Years option.

At AAS we aim to:

2. Guide each student to develop intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically, to their potential.
3. Acknowledge and foster each students’ uniqueness.

Our school vision is ‘Creative, resilient and self-driven learners who collaborate, communicate and solve problems’. We foster this vision through implementing contemporary programs, teaching of values education and pastoral care. Our school values are, “TOGETHER we, RESPECT ourselves, each other, school and community, strive for EXCELLENCE, show COURAGE in all situations, and demonstrate SAFETY in all that we do.”

We place a strong emphasis on quality Literacy, Numeracy and Social Skills. Read Write Inc (RWI) is our phonics program for reading in the early years and coupled with Fresh Start, is implemented as intervention for the Upper Primary and Middle School. Read Write Inc is a systematic synthetic phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.

We explicitly teach the content from the NT SEL program to support our students social and emotional skills. The NT SEL program (Northern Territory Social Emotional Learning) is a wellbeing, engagement and behaviour program that aligns with Australian Curriculum. This is supported and supplemented with our focus on using strategies embedded in the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). The BSEM provides strategies for teaching and learning that enables teachers to increase engagement of students with complex, unmet learning needs and to successfully improve all students’ self-regulation, relationships, wellbeing, growth and academic achievement. Our pedagogical strategies incorporate trauma-informed teaching, positive education, and wellbeing practices.

Communication between home and school is vital. Feedback from our students, families and community is most welcomed. We encourage everyone to keep us informed, whether it is letting us know when you are pleased about things happening in our school, ideas for improving the school, and discussing concerns with us to seek understanding of the way in which AAS functions.

Our school is multi-cultural with 65% non-indigenous which includes several students from other countries. 35% of our students are indigenous. We embrace and celebrate the diversity of our many cultures.
